What would cause an open ground?
An open ground is when you have a three-prong receptacle that is not connected to an equipment grounding conductor.
This is unsafe because an appliance that is designed to use an equipment ground to discharge an unsafe fault condition will not have a conductor to discharge that fault.
How do I fix a plug with an open ground?
Turn the power off and verify it is off using the non-contact voltage tester. Run a ground wire or cable of the proper gauge from the outlet box to the circuit panel. Attach the wire or cable to the grounded bus in the circuit panel.
Can an open ground cause a fire?
Yes, absolutely. Ungrounded outlets increase the chance of: Electrical fire. Without the ground present, errors that occur with your outlet may cause arcing, sparks and electrical charge that can spawn fire along walls, or on nearby furniture and fixtures.
