How To Fix Piston Slap?

What causes piston slap?

Piston slap is caused by too much clearance between the bore and the piston.

The cause is the bore being worn out of round at right angles to the piston pin.

Is piston slap serious?

Piston slap in itself is not harmful – after all it is just a noise and all engines make lots of noises as a result of different clearances, varying lubrication rates, harmonics & pulsations, etc. Audible noise is emitted by vibration and the noises we hear have to be within the human audible range; some are not.

What is piston slap why does it occur and how is it eliminated?

Piston slap is a noise created by the piston to cylinder wall clearance being excessive, or the cylinder bore being out of round, so the piston skirt slaps in the bore as it travels up and down.. Normally this occurs on idle and overrun. If pistons and bores are setup/machined to correct specs slap shouldn’t occur.

What does a piston slap sound like?

A hollow, muffled, almost bell-like sound is usually piston slap. This condition is caused by a piston rocking back and forth within its cylinder. A continuous piston slap sound is usually caused by worn pistons, excessive piston-to-wall clearance, misaligned connecting rods, worn cylinder walls, or inadequate oil.

Can piston slap Be Fixed?

You can replace the oversized pistons with two passenger side pistons. Replace also the rings. Most people have been solving piston slap by having the pistons knurled through a lathe and knurling tool. But the modification can cause idling and this exuberates the piston slap.

Does piston slap go away?

Piston slap most commonly goes away after the motor is warmed up and in closed loop, but I’ve heard some that still have a faint slapping sound continuously. Piston slap is generally only heard on cold starts and will go away after the engine is warmed up.

Can piston slap cause misfire?

The reason for misfires varies and include faulty/dirty fuel injector, bad ignition coils, expired spark plugs, or bad spark wire. These, however, does not cause the piston slap but for the blue smoke emitted by the exhaust.

Will piston slap ruin my engine?

In the long run, piston slap is harmful for your engine, as it will probably become more and more noticeable while the cylinder walls and piston clearance gets higher. If you have aluminum pistons with short skirt length, they can damage pistons when you rev up the engine while it is cold.
